Pet Dental Care in Ottumwa, IA

A common myth about our pet’s health is that bad breath is “normal,” however it is more than just a nuisance – it is often a sign of an unhealthy mouth. Bad breath is often a result of bacteria building up in the pet’s mouth, which leads to plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth, red irritated gums, and dental disease. Other signs of dental disease are drooling, discomfort while chewing, and loose or missing teeth. Oftentimes, this can be extremely painful for pets and can even result in a loss of appetite. Dental disease can also be associated with other serious health problems such as heart disease and kidney disease.

This is why we recommend having an annual dental exam for your pet. Dental treats and chews are helpful to control tartar, but they are not as effective as dental exams and cleanings. A simple examination of your pet’s teeth and gums will help us determine if there are any dental issues you should be aware of and if a more detailed examination and/or cleaning is required. It is truly amazing the difference that one dental cleaning can make in your pet’s teeth!
